semesters end

Good Morning All,

As everyone knows the fall semester is coming to an end. We had our last class of the semester on Tuesday 12/14/10. Now just because there will be no classes over the winter break does not mean that we are still not training. Over break it is very important that we stretch. I can tell you from my past experience that not stretching for a longer span of time is not good. I used to be able to do my full splits, then I took some time off with limited to no stretching and I still do not have them back. I also know that it is very hard to train techniques inside of your house, unless you are lucky enough to have a big open area. If you are not one of those lucky people that doesn't mean we still can't train. This just means that we need to do more mental training. Go to the library and get a martial arts book to read and journal about what you learned or need clarifying about. This is just one thing we can do to train ourselves mentally.

There is still time to recieve your $100 discount to the Vermont summer camp. I will need an email confermation no later than 12/23/10. Signing up by this date means that your fee will only be $250. If you are not sure and want more information prior to signing up please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns and we will be happy to help you out.

Finally good luck to everyone that will be taking finals this week and next week. Have a fun, relaxing, and most of all safe break from school and taekwondo class. I look forward to seeing all of you come back next semester and train like true black belts.

12/7/10 testing update

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to give everyone an update about testing. It will be in union room 191 at 2pm. There are two students testing so it will be an in class testing. This means come ready for class and that includes all of your gear. As of right now Sensei Kopish will be teaching and I am waiting to hear back from Mr. Nusslock but last I heard he was confirming the date with me so i am assuming he will be there. After testing we will go out for a bite to eat then a social gathering at Mr. Olsen/ Nate Winter's house.

A Message from Master Olds

Good evening, or should I say, good morning!

I hope everyone is doing well back home.  I have not forgotten you!  Rising Phoenix is very much always in my thoughts.  Mr. Taddey has informed me things are going well this semester, and I am thrilled to hear it.  I am tremendously grateful to Mr. Taddey and the other instructors for keeping things going in my absence.  Just as importantly, I am enduringly grateful to the students for their continued support of the organization.

I am doing well overseas, and will not come back without stories.  Some things have been nothing but bliss, exactly as you would imagine it; however, with great joys, there are also great hardships, and I have never before endured so much of both in such great amounts.  I am very much pioneering a new way of living abroad and working in taekwondo.  In part, this email is a solicitation to follow me on my adventure by subscribing to my blog at themartialartsjourney.blogspot.com.  I have recently revamped what was originally a pet-project into a more serious mode of personal promotion and communication with my overseas students.  The blog only contains two posts at present, both intended to be examples of later entries to come.  The posts will be broken down into two categories, represented by their tags.  Those articles tagged as memoir will address issues in my current life abroad.  Those articles tagged lecture will focus exclusively on some lesson I am trying to impart.  Feel free to comment and ask questions.  Just remember that if you flame, I will BREAK YOU. ;P

In the second part of this email, I wanted to address the summer camp.  I see that Mr. Taddey has sent out an email to students expressing that if you get your money in before the end of the semester, you will shave $100 off tuition and it will only cost you $250.  The summer camp will take place during the last week of July, from the 23rd to the 30th, with departure from UWM at 6:00 AM Friday morning.  These details are not really important at this juncture, but if you need to get off work, put in that request.  I know the end of the semester is a frantic rush, and so I am fine with you getting your money in sometime early next semester, so long as you give Mr. Taddey a verbal confirmation or written conformation by the end of this semester.  An excuse at this juncture is an excuse.  If you're worried about the level of training, I can vouch that every student of Rising Phoenix is capable of rising to the challenge.  Just take seven classes and sew them together, then place them back to back for a week.  No problem!  If you're worried about the lengthy ride out there, it's an adventure, nearly as memorable as the camp itself.  You will tell great stories and have much pointless, but witty banter, and you will get to see a great stretch of the country while doing so.  Hey, we even might throw in a free seminar on the way like last time.  For those that are worried about accommodations, you will live far superior to any college living arrangement.  For those that are worried about food, well, yeah, but what do you expect?  You mean you don't want to eat like a Shaolin monk?

Realizing that this email may reach students at Lake Country Martial Arts, I will except students 18 years or older, or 17 with written parental consent.  The camp is intended for college age students, at least for several more years, and will carry that environment out of necessity until then.  (Any questions or concerns can be sent to me at jmichaelolds@gmail.com.)

In closing, please subscribe to my blog; please join us for the camp.  Keep up the training, remember we need you and appreciate your contributions.

Sincerely,

Master Olds

update 11/6/10

Hey all,

Just a reminder that if you believe you are eligable to test make sure you register by Tuesday December 7th. At the moment there are two people who registered and are eligable to test. If there is no one else that is eligable to test then we will do an in class testing and I have been contacting Sensei Kopish and Mr. Nusslock about teaching on the 12th. I will let you all know for sure after the registration dead line.

Also, if you want to go to the Vermont summer camp and would like to recieve a $100 discount to only pay $250 you need to sign up before the end of the semester. To sign up please email your confermation and I will let you know about all the payment at that time. This is going to be a great week of fun, learning, and training on a beautiful mountian that you do not want to miss and you will get to train with Master Olds.

update 11/11/10

Hey all,

This Friday and Saturday the 12th and 13th Julie and Mark will be performing at 7:30pm at zelazo. This is a great opportunity to come and support your fellow students. It would be nice to get a group to go, so if you are interested in going contact your fellow students and see who else is going. I am going to try and make the friday performance. If anyone else is going please let me know. I know Julie and Mark would much appreciate it if everyone came and supported them.

November 19th we will be doing a 15 min demo in greene hall at 1:30pm. This is a good time to come and show off and support Korean day. Especially since Korea is where Taekwondo started.

We are working on getting rooms in the union for the up coming week so keep looking for those. Otherwise we will have our usual Tuesday and Thursday classes in Klotche 110 at 8:40pm. Since Klotche will be open till 11pm instead of 10pm look for a second class to be added to the schedule on those days as well in the very near future.

Lastly, just a reminder from the beginning of the semester that if you are interested in going to the Vermont Summer Camp and would like to save some money on the trip you must sign up before the end of the fall semester. Also there are scholarships avalible on top of the early bird sign up discount. Come and talk with one of the instructors if you want more infromation on the summer camp.

update 11/5/10

Hello all,

Just a quick reminder that class this week will be Tuesday and Wednesday in Klotche 110 at 840pm. Keep checking the calender and your email for more classes being added as well.

November 19th we will be doing a demo for Korean Day at Greene Hall at 130pm. If you would like to be apart of the demo you need to email or come and talk to me asap. If a demo isn't for you there are several other things that you can do to participate and support your school and fellow students and instructors. For demos you could do forms, kichos, board breaking, defenses or if you have any other ideas they can be considered. We will only have 15 minutes to do the demonstration so it can't be anything that will take very long.

Also, this Wednesday bring all of your sparring gear. We will be sparring the entire class. If you do not have gear I encourge you to come anyways and if you are very nice to me i may even bring some extra gear.haha

update 10/31/10

Hello all,

Hope that everyone had an awesome and safe halloween. But now that the fun is over we have a few classes this week. We will have our normal Tuesday class at klotche 110 at 840pm. Unlike other weeks we will be having class again Wednesday and not Thursday. We will still have class at 840pm in klotche 110, just on a different day.

Just a few reminders, if anyone is interested in being part of a demo or supporting Rising Phoenix at Korean day on November 19th and we do not have a time yet for when we will be doing the demo. It doesn't matter rank or skill level just a willingness to come and show off your skill. If demonstrations are not for you there are plenty of other ways that you can still participate. The even will be going on from noon till 2 so even if you cannot make it to the demo it would be great to stop by and check it out.

Also, we would like to add in some weekend practices out at the grafton dojang. It would be $5-10 per practice and you would not have to commit to being at all of them, just a majority of them. We do not have a specific day or time yet, need to make sure we have the people lined up and try to work it into as many schedules as possible.

Please let me know as soon as possible about the Korean day demo or grafton trainings so we can get everything set and ready to go.

update 10/27/10

Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to congradulate Nate Winter and Sara Koenig on their new belts after testing on Friday. From my own doing I was not able to have new certificates made and printed for testing day, so during class on Thursday, 10/28/10, I will be handing out the certificates to Nate and Sara. There were many students that came to support them at testing and I would encourage everyone to come and congradulate them for their accomplishments.

Mr. Nusslock contacted me yesterday and asked me to see if anyone would be interested in doing grafton training two times a month. There would be a $5-10 cost per class and we would be looking for 5-10 people that would be interested and committing to going to all of these practices. Class would be 1-2 hours long and, if you were training over the summer, a similar format to summer classes at the grafton dojang.

Also, Sooyeon has asked me if Rising Phoenix would be interested in doing a demonstration on Friday November 19th. It will be from Noon to 2pm. I do not have a specific time for the demo at the moment. Once I do I will let everyone know. This is a great opportunity for everyone to be involed in supporting and promoting our dojang.

Lastly, end of semester tesing date will be December 12th in union room 191 at 1:00pm

If you are interested in grafton dojang classes or helping with the demonstration or have any questions please let me know.

Hey everyone,

Last week there was a request for sparring. So this Thursday10/14/10, we will be sparring. So if you have gear please bring it to class. Classes, Brat Fry, and Birthday Celebration

Hello Everyone!

First off, I hope everyone had a great week. It was wonderful to see so many of you at practice onThursday! We have a few announcements to make for the coming weeks so get your calendars ready, or just make sure to head over to risingphoenixtkd.com and take a look at the Herald and under "Schedule".

Regarding upcoming practice days we are happy to have a full week ahead of us. Tuesday and Thursdaywill still be in the padded room 110 of the Klotche Center at 8:40pm until 10:00pm. Monday and Wednesdaypractices this week will be held in room 280 in the Union from 7:00pm until 8:00pm.

In two weeks, on Monday the 18th, the club will be hosting a fund raising brat fry in Spaights Plaza from 10:00am to approximately 3:00pm or until we've sold all our brats =D. The proceeds of this brat fry and other fund raising go towards paying for practice spaces, new equipment, and lowering costs to members. Fund raisers like these help out the Fellowship immensely so if you have some free time in between classes on that day please come help sell, cook and yell about our brats, even if its only for a half hour or so. Besides, who doesn't love a good ol' fashioned cook out? If you really are pressed for time on Monday, don't sweat it. There are plenty of other things you can do to help just during your 5 minutes between classes. Stop over during the day for lunch and pick up a brat! Gallivant it around campus on your way to class, proudly dawning your Rising Phoenix apparel! Make mouth watering faces at your brat as you pass by other students. Make everyone else extremely hungry when they see you, and when they ask you where you acquired such a delicious specimen of bratwurst you tell them, "Spaights Plaza! Rising Phoenix Tae Kwon Do Fellowship makes the best brats this side of the equator!" =D

Finally, this Saturday, the 9th of October we will be holding a social gathering celebrating some of the recent birthdays in the Fellowship! Everyone is invited to this event which will be held at mine and Mr. Olsen's house, 2424 N. Frederick Avenue starting around 8:30pm. Our very own Julie Steinbach has offered to make a cake for this occasion! But that shouldn't stop you from bringing other delicious food or beverage along with your smiling faces. The more the merrier! (That applies for food too, right?) And of course, these events are always wonderful opportunities to reunite with fellow members. If you haven't been able to make classes in a while or feel a bit distant from the club we would LOVE to see you this night. Family's are related by blood and spirit. This is the perfect opportunity to reconnect with your Tae Kwon Do brothers and sisters. We hope to see you very soon!

All the best,

Nate Winter

Awareness Beads

I've noticed quite a few people still don't know about awareness beads, even students with them.  I think this may be due to the brevity by which I address them at testing.  Anyway, I've added a new page to the website that details them in more depth.  Let us know if you have further questions; additionally, if you need a pair of awareness beads, please speak to Mr. Taddey.  He will have to figure out what to do about them in my absence.  I have none to give him at the moment.  For years, I had thought about shifting that responsibility to one of the students.  But he will have to make that judgment call.  Maybe if you would be interested in making the beads for us, you could talk to him.  There is, of course, a process to follow, but you would be allotted a commission of $5 for each bracelet.

Thursday Classes + Testing/Class and After Party

Hey everyone,
I have been informed that we will be having class on Thursday at Klotchie room 110, also known as the padded room. Class will be starting at 8:40. This is also posted on the new websites calender, www.risingphoenixtkd.com Also, we will be having class and testing on Friday in the Wisconsin room at 6:00, so come support your fellow students as they progress to the next ranks. This will be a very special class as it will be the last class taught by Master Olds before he leaves for Korea. I encourage all students past and present to come to class and train with him once more this year. After class we will be having a social gathering, a farewell party for Master Olds, at Mr. Olsen/Nate Winters house, 2424 N Fredrick Ave. This will begin around 8:30 and we would again love to see everyone there. This is a chance to not only say see you later to our fearless leader but also another opportunity to strenthen the family of Rising Phoenix.
I look forward to seeing everyone at class, testing, and social gathering not only this week but throughout the entire year.

Schedule Rectified

Ok, it took me a long time to figure out how to do it, but you should now be able to see the entire schedule on the website, complete with classes, events, deadlines, and meetings.  You can further sift through these categories by clicking on the tabs to the right.  Officers/instructors, please check the Google docs for formatting information when posting on the schedule.

New Features Added to the Website

As you are well aware, I'm reconstructing the website.  The next few days will herald a lot of new additions.  The latest of these are the registration forms and this news blog, which I am so excited about.  Previously, we had to manually edit the page.  This was tedious and time consuming, with access limited only to myself.  The new blog will allow any officers or instructors to seamlessly update the news while logged into our gmail account.  Going back to the registration forms, I've chosen not to add the CT and DT buttons until we reopen those programs, hopefully sometime after I return from Korea.  They will remain grayed-out until that point.

Anyway, check back frequently if you want to see all the cool new additions.  I'll try to post them as I come to resting points.  Oh, and I appologize if you visit and see a battlefield of icons.  I sort of work in a trial by error manner. ;)

Classes Start this Week

Welcome back!  We begin another exciting year of Rising Phoenix.  This week we will have three practices.  All will take place in the Student Union, Wisconsin Room, from 7:00 to 8:00 PM.  Please dress in uniform.  New students may wear some loose-fitting clothes or a blank dobok.
We are still solidify dates in Klotsche Center and the performing arts building.  This may take up to a few weeks.  Please be patient as we work with the university to get our usual facilities.  We will keep you notified via the website as information becomes available.
