semesters end

Good Morning All,

As everyone knows the fall semester is coming to an end. We had our last class of the semester on Tuesday 12/14/10. Now just because there will be no classes over the winter break does not mean that we are still not training. Over break it is very important that we stretch. I can tell you from my past experience that not stretching for a longer span of time is not good. I used to be able to do my full splits, then I took some time off with limited to no stretching and I still do not have them back. I also know that it is very hard to train techniques inside of your house, unless you are lucky enough to have a big open area. If you are not one of those lucky people that doesn't mean we still can't train. This just means that we need to do more mental training. Go to the library and get a martial arts book to read and journal about what you learned or need clarifying about. This is just one thing we can do to train ourselves mentally.

There is still time to recieve your $100 discount to the Vermont summer camp. I will need an email confermation no later than 12/23/10. Signing up by this date means that your fee will only be $250. If you are not sure and want more information prior to signing up please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns and we will be happy to help you out.

Finally good luck to everyone that will be taking finals this week and next week. Have a fun, relaxing, and most of all safe break from school and taekwondo class. I look forward to seeing all of you come back next semester and train like true black belts.

12/7/10 testing update

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to give everyone an update about testing. It will be in union room 191 at 2pm. There are two students testing so it will be an in class testing. This means come ready for class and that includes all of your gear. As of right now Sensei Kopish will be teaching and I am waiting to hear back from Mr. Nusslock but last I heard he was confirming the date with me so i am assuming he will be there. After testing we will go out for a bite to eat then a social gathering at Mr. Olsen/ Nate Winter's house.

A Message from Master Olds

Good evening, or should I say, good morning!

I hope everyone is doing well back home.  I have not forgotten you!  Rising Phoenix is very much always in my thoughts.  Mr. Taddey has informed me things are going well this semester, and I am thrilled to hear it.  I am tremendously grateful to Mr. Taddey and the other instructors for keeping things going in my absence.  Just as importantly, I am enduringly grateful to the students for their continued support of the organization.

I am doing well overseas, and will not come back without stories.  Some things have been nothing but bliss, exactly as you would imagine it; however, with great joys, there are also great hardships, and I have never before endured so much of both in such great amounts.  I am very much pioneering a new way of living abroad and working in taekwondo.  In part, this email is a solicitation to follow me on my adventure by subscribing to my blog at themartialartsjourney.blogspot.com.  I have recently revamped what was originally a pet-project into a more serious mode of personal promotion and communication with my overseas students.  The blog only contains two posts at present, both intended to be examples of later entries to come.  The posts will be broken down into two categories, represented by their tags.  Those articles tagged as memoir will address issues in my current life abroad.  Those articles tagged lecture will focus exclusively on some lesson I am trying to impart.  Feel free to comment and ask questions.  Just remember that if you flame, I will BREAK YOU. ;P

In the second part of this email, I wanted to address the summer camp.  I see that Mr. Taddey has sent out an email to students expressing that if you get your money in before the end of the semester, you will shave $100 off tuition and it will only cost you $250.  The summer camp will take place during the last week of July, from the 23rd to the 30th, with departure from UWM at 6:00 AM Friday morning.  These details are not really important at this juncture, but if you need to get off work, put in that request.  I know the end of the semester is a frantic rush, and so I am fine with you getting your money in sometime early next semester, so long as you give Mr. Taddey a verbal confirmation or written conformation by the end of this semester.  An excuse at this juncture is an excuse.  If you're worried about the level of training, I can vouch that every student of Rising Phoenix is capable of rising to the challenge.  Just take seven classes and sew them together, then place them back to back for a week.  No problem!  If you're worried about the lengthy ride out there, it's an adventure, nearly as memorable as the camp itself.  You will tell great stories and have much pointless, but witty banter, and you will get to see a great stretch of the country while doing so.  Hey, we even might throw in a free seminar on the way like last time.  For those that are worried about accommodations, you will live far superior to any college living arrangement.  For those that are worried about food, well, yeah, but what do you expect?  You mean you don't want to eat like a Shaolin monk?

Realizing that this email may reach students at Lake Country Martial Arts, I will except students 18 years or older, or 17 with written parental consent.  The camp is intended for college age students, at least for several more years, and will carry that environment out of necessity until then.  (Any questions or concerns can be sent to me at jmichaelolds@gmail.com.)

In closing, please subscribe to my blog; please join us for the camp.  Keep up the training, remember we need you and appreciate your contributions.

Sincerely,

Master Olds

update 11/6/10

Hey all,

Just a reminder that if you believe you are eligable to test make sure you register by Tuesday December 7th. At the moment there are two people who registered and are eligable to test. If there is no one else that is eligable to test then we will do an in class testing and I have been contacting Sensei Kopish and Mr. Nusslock about teaching on the 12th. I will let you all know for sure after the registration dead line.

Also, if you want to go to the Vermont summer camp and would like to recieve a $100 discount to only pay $250 you need to sign up before the end of the semester. To sign up please email your confermation and I will let you know about all the payment at that time. This is going to be a great week of fun, learning, and training on a beautiful mountian that you do not want to miss and you will get to train with Master Olds.
