Please let me know by the end of this week if you are interested in the summer camp in Vermont. It is usually the last week of July. This will not commit you to going it will just be so I have an idea of who is interested and can get you more information so you can make your final decisions.

Lastly, make sure you show your pride for your school and  vote for Rising Phoenix at The voting ends December 18th so it is coming up very quick.

Good luck on finals and hopefully I will see many of you this last week of practices.

update 11/15/11

Good evening everyone,

Unfortunately we do not have a Union room for tonight like normal. We will have our normal class on Friday at 6pm in Klotche 110. If you have sparring gear please bring it, if you do not have sparring gear just bring yourself.

Next week is Thanksgiving so we will not have our normal Friday night class. If we are able to get Union space we will let you know as soon as possible.

Testing is coming up very soon on December 3rd. Please come and talk to me about testing if you have been to practices regularly threw out the semester.

As many of you know the summer camp will be here before we know it. If you want more information about the camp or how much it is or how you can save money please email me or come and talk to me and I will get you all the info you need. To start planning, the camp is usually the last week of July. More precise dates will be coming soon.

Lastly, if I don't see you before thanksgiving break have a safe, relaxing, and fun break.

update 10/24/11

Good afternoon everyone,

Hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather we have had the last few days. Just a few reminders for the week. If you told us you would be at the Sandberg Channel demo on Tuesday (tomorrow) make sure you are there at 5:30 pm as the demo/class will be starting at 6pm. Make sure to come in or bring your uniform as well as your confidence to talk to the people that come to see us and look for more information about the club. We will also be having class Friday at 6pm in Klotche 110. Again bring your sparring gear, if you have some, we may be sparring so be prepared by having all of your gear. If you do not own gear that is ok, you can still come to class and work with the black belts.

We will be having a seminar on November 11th in Union 181. This will not be a physical seminar, it will be a sit down, listen, take notes, and ask questions. The speaker will be talking about and explaining the confusing laws that talk about self-defense. This is an extremely good seminar and you will learn so much. I have done this seminar twice already and both times I learned or retained something new and of course there are always new questions that come up. Now if I remember correct the first time I attended this seminar I paid $60 and the second time was $30-40. But I know that is hard for us college students so I worked out with the speaker that we would only charge $10 for all current and past members of the club. So yes, if you have graduated or transferred to another school you can still attend and get the cheaper rate. I encourage everyone past and present to attend this awesome seminar. I promise you will learn valuable information about defending yourself, others, and property.

If you have never been a member of Rising Phoenix you are still able to attend the seminar for $15. So invite friends or people from other martial arts clubs on campus or people from other schools that you may attend or started training at.

There will be a fb event that you can RSVP if you will be coming or not, that will be up very soon so you can respond and invite other people to come.

See all of you this week or very soon,

Mr. Taddey

update 10/16/11

Hello all,

Just wanted to inform you on class times this week. We have Tuesday at 7pm in Union 345b&c and Friday at 6pm in Klotche 110. From now on make sure, if you have sparring gear, that you start bringing it to the Klotche practices. Sensei Kopish will be coming to some of these practices and wants to work on sparring. If you are missing any gear or want to get gear please come and talk to me and I can help you out.

If you have not renewed by the deadline of this past Friday make sure you do that at your next class.

Tuesday October 25th we will be doing a demonstration in the Sandburg Channel, at night, and need to know how many guest passes we will need so let us know asap if you would like to be there and support your school.

Lastly, we are bringing in a guest speaker on November 11th to talk about the laws behind self-defense. This is a very good seminar that I have attended to previous times and have learned something both times. The speaker is a master in escrima, retired police officer, former swat training, expert witness and many other credentials that he will tell you on that night. More information will be out very soon.

Update 10/3/11

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to update all of you about practice this week. We will be having practice on Tuesday Oct 4th at 7 p.m. in the Union Ballroom West. Our 2nd practice this week will be on Friday Oct. 7th at 6 p.m. in the padded room (Klotche 110).

This is also a very important semester for us. We are putting a lot of effort  into getting new students. So one thing we would like to do for all of the current students is to try and have you bring in or refer new students to the club. From my past experience with teaching at other schools, this is the best way to get new students. So what we are going to do for you is give you a little gift. For every 2 people that you refer to the club and they enroll you get a new t-shirt or equal value off of a new uniform or testing. If you refer 4 people in and they do not enroll, but they came to a practice, you will receive a t-shirt or equal value off of a uniform or testing.

Also, renewals will be due next Friday Oct. 14th. So make sure between now and then you come and see me to get a renewal form. Remember the sooner you renew the sooner your attendance towards testing starts to get counted.

Lastly if you see any giant phoenix's around campus that is thanks to our very own Mr. Martin (aka Duncan) for making us a 6 foot by 6 foot stencil that we can use spray chalk to chalk around campus.

testing reminder

Hello Everyone,

Just a reminder that next Sunday, May 1st, is testing. It will be held in the Wisconsin Room East at 6pm. If you are planning on testing make sure that you register by this Saturday, April 22nd and make sure you get your testing fees turned in by testing, preferably prior to testing. If you are not testing make sure you come and support your fellow students as they test for their next belt. We will also need help in holding boards, holding bags, and black belts not testing possibly sparring with the other black belts. Also, if someone that is not testing would like to take pictures that would be much appreciated.

If you have any questions or concerns please let me know and I will do my best to help you out.

update 3/20/11

Happy spring break everyone, hope all of you will have a great time away from school. Just a few quick things to keep in mind over break.

First of all I assume everyone has heard about Japan by now, so I wont go into everything that happened. In order to help out the people of Japan, Rising Phoenix will be participating with other organizations on campus in a penny war. If you don't know what a penny war is, it is very simple. We want to collect as many pennies as we can to get us points. All silver coins and dollar bills count as negative points. So we want as many positive points as possible. So what we need to do is collect all of your pennies, parents, grandparents, friends or just go to the bank and get rolls of pennies. You can bring these pennies to me at class or drop them off in our jar in the union yourself. Also, you can bring silver coins or dollar bills to put in other orgs jars to bring their points down. This will be taking place the week after spring break. There will be people of the 1st floor of the union from 2:30-4 pm on March 28-31st. If you bring coins to practice on Monday the 28th or Tuesday the 29th I will deposit all of those coins into our jar on Thursday. Otherwise, like I said you can do it on your own throughout the week during the specified times. Lets show the rest of the orgs on campus that we are the most BA by winning this little competition and at the same time helping a country that has had a very large influence on martial arts. I have attached a flier with this info as well.

Second, make sure that Tuesday classes you have all of your sparring gear. If you do not own sparring gear or are missing any talk to me, email, text, phone call, in person, or how ever and I will help you to make sure that you get gear. After spring break I will not be bringing gear for people to borrow unless you have ordered gear and it has not been shipped to you.

Testing will be help on May 1st. Make sure if you are planning on testing that you continue to come to class as well as working on all of your techniques outside of class.

Lastly, there is still room for the summer camp in Vermont. This will be an amazing opportunity to train in nature for a week with Master Olds. Also, we may be stopping in Ohio to visit and possible train with Grandmaster Kwon. Even if you are just considering going please come and talk to me. Also talk to Mr. Arnold, Mr. Olsen, and Sara about their experience last year.

Have a great spring break and I will see all of you when we come back to practice,

Mr. Taddey

March Newsletter

New Membership Practice
We will be holding a new membership practice at a nearby church, just north of campus, on the corner of Maryland and Shorewood. (This is within walking distance.) Practice will begin at 8:00 PM on Mondays. Please bring your sparring gear. Sensei Kopish will be running class. Oh, and when you get to the church, please enter via the side door, located on the east of the building. A service will be letting out about the same time that we will be arriving.

We are looking to order new uniforms. If you're thinking about getting a new uniform, or any apparel for that matter, please speak with an instructor in the coming weeks so we can get things together.

Movie Night
We are stilling planning to hold a movie night on the 18th, around 9:00 PM. Please keep that date free. It is a Friday. We will announce the details via email soon.

We are still looking to fill slot for the Vermont trip, as well as pledges to drive. We will likely be stopping in Ohio for a seminar and dinner with various Grandmaster and Masters; aside from the dinner, lodging and gas will be covered in the enrollment fee. This again is $350, or $250 if you signed up last semester. It will cover everything for the entire week of training.

update 2/25/11

Hello All,

Just a few updates and reminders. First of all we will be adding a permanent member only class to our spring class schedule. We will be having class at a church gym that is just north of campus. The gym is on the corner of Maryland and Shorewood. When you get to the church make sure that you enter on the east side of the building and not the main church doors as there will be a church service concluding at the time we arrive. Class will start at 8pm.

Second, I would encourage all of you that have gear to start bringing it to class on Tuesdays as Sensei Kopish will be teaching and I don't know what he is planning on teaching or doing during class. So make sure that you start doing that this coming week.

Third, we are planning on ordering more uniforms. I still have to do an inventory of what we need but if you want a new or extra uniform please let me or one of the other instructors know so we can ensure that we have a uniform for you. Also if you want any other equipment come and talk to me and we will get you hooked up. Or if you want a free t-shirt get three people to sign up as a member.

Lastly, there is still room for you to go to Vermont for the summer camp. If you want to go you need to send an email saying that you want to go or are interested and we will get you all the information that you need.

February Newsletter

Social Gathering: We will be holding a social gathering on February 5th, starting at 9:00 PM. It will take place at Nate and Mr. Olsen's house, located at 2424 N. Fredrick Ave. This is sort of a welcome back party, so new, old, and prospective members are encourage to attend. Bring friends; the more the merrier. Please be courteous to the hosts, offering to pay for beer or bringing your own if you come with a lot of friends.

Renewal Fees Due: Renewal Fees are due in by Friday, February 12th. That's less than two weeks away. The renewal fee is only $25 and covers tuition for the semester. We use this money to accomplish things as an organization, and since we're working to pay off some debts at the moment, we need this donation more than ever. Please deliver your money to one of the officers or instructors. They should have paperwork for you to fill out. If you don't have a new handbook, you can get one at that time. If you fail to turn in your membership renewal fee by the deadline, you can still come to class, but you will not be accredited. We are looking to hold a larger testing this year, so we want to encourage as many members to get that money is now so that you have the best chance of being ready at the end of the semester.

Bowling Night: In the past, we have somewhat neglected our large body of members that opt not to drink. We will be holding an event for just such individuals located at the Student Union bowling lanes. It's free bowling on Fridays, so there's little reasons not to come! I think you have to pay like two bucks for shoes, or something, but that's it. You need to be there on time, however, to get a lane. We will start gathering a little before 9:00 PM. Please wear your T-shirts for easy recognition by new members.

Movie Night: We are looking to hold a movie night on March 18th. The details are still being pounded out, but keep that day open. We hope to watch some sweet martial arts movies.

A Little About Master Olds: I was recently interviewed by a taekwondo reporter, and may appear in the korean newspaper. The article has to do with me attending a masters' poomsae conference in korea, but may focus on my unique position as one of the only american ever to teach abroad in Korea.

update 1/23/11

Good evening,

As everyone has probably heard our beloved Packers are going to the Super Bowl. So everyone should be SUPER PUMPED!!!!!

In other news the officers and I met the other day to go over somethings for the club this semester. To start off just a reminder that there will be classes this Monday and Tuesday at 7pm in Wisconsin room east in the union. There will be a social gathering on February 5th as a welcome back, Packer celebration, and everything else that needs to be celebrated. On February 18th we will be going bowling at the Union Rec Center. All of this is also on the calender on the website with times and locations and we will be reminding everyone as these events get closer. We will be adding more events and social gatherings to the calender as we move through the semester. Also if anyone has any ideas that they would like to do for a club event please feel free to let one of the officers know about it, although we cannot promise that we will be able to do any and all suggestions.

We are working on getting permanent rooms for the semester. Until that time keep checking your emails and the calender for when and where classes will be held. Also if you bring 3 people to class and they pay and become members then you will receive a free Rising Phoenix T-shirt. If you bring so many people and don't want any more T-shirts then we can work something out but I don't know who wouldn't want a ton of Rising Phoenix T-shirts? They are pretty awesome.

Lastly have a great semester in school and martial arts and I look forward to seeing all of you continue to grow not only in martial arts but all aspects of your journey of life.

January Newsletter

Welcome Back!
As we rush towards the start of a new semester, we cannot forget our cherished martial arts club, Rising Phoenix Taekwondo Fellowship. I wanted to send out this email to encourage all students (new, old, and prospective) to resume or begin their training with the club. Now is always the time. Later has a tendency to turn into forever. As we rise once again, remember only through hard training can we attain tangible rewards. Make that commitment at the onset and stay the path with conviction. I know each one of you has it in you. Mr. Taddey has told me good things about last semester, and I am enthusiastic to see further growth and development. I will be returning, for a short time, before heading to Vermont for the summer camp, and I am eager see you all and witness your progress over the year.

The Newsletter
You may have noticed that this email looks super awesome. That's because I am using a new resource at our disposal, MailChimp. How exactly we use this method of communication will depend upon its manageability, but presently I would like to use it to release a series of newsletters, published at the start of each month, that covers the events of that month and two weeks into the next. Officers will need to plan these events at least two months in advance, with an ideal timeline being before the semester even begins. The newsletter will also recap events that occurred the previous month in a short synopsis. It will be organized by topic headings, making it easily navigable. You will also benefit from a short summery at the very beginning of the email (the text in gray, if you are reading this in HTML) to help you determine the relevancy. My hope is that through stronger communication, we can facilitate more stability with the schedule and more interest from the students. Quick announcements, such as class cancelations, weekly class additions, and impromptu social gatherings, will still go through the normal avenue, though they may eventually integrate with MailChimp as well. Regardless of origin, all information should be available on the website via the Herald.

Possibilities for the Camp
I have been in correspondence with Grandmaster Kwon, and I am looking to do a seminar on the way out to Vermont. In addition, if people are willing to shave off a day of training, we may spend the night in Ohio. If that were the case, we could also have a dinner with Grandmaster, and other notable martial artists in the area. For those of you who attended the camp last semester, my plan for the seminar is a bit different this time around. My hope is to join a sparring meet that Grandmaster will host for other competitors in the area. This would make for a very rich experience, and I think would add a lot to our trip out there. There might need to be some additional fee for this side trip, but it will depend upon the affordability of lodging, which I am looking into now. Either way, it should be a very reasonable addition.

My Future Plans
While I am reluctant to reveal too many details at this juncture, I want to be true with everyone lest there is some disillusionment later. In light events that have unraveled in my travels abroad, my life has sped up faster than I had imagined, and I may not be returning to Milwaukee in full. I still, of course, will come for seminars and testings, but if I am going to seize my dream, I cannot delay. Know that Rising Phoenix and the Fellowship are very much apart of that dream, and I intent to play a part in all of your lives and development in the years to come; however, I worry that if you holdout hope for my return, you may delay full involvement within the club. And that would be a great mistake.

When I selected Mr. Taddey to fill my shoes, I did not do so without great deliberation. He has the potential to be every bit the leader I ever was to you. I want you to know that when I first began the programs that eventually culminated in Rising Phoenix, I was no older than he is now. He has the experience and the skill to take you all the way. And you must now see him as the heart of this organization at UWM. Please support him in our mission to build the best collegiate martial arts club. Great things are possible because we believe and take action, but only in that manner.

In moving forward, I have advised Mr. Taddey to look to our longtime members and cherished instructors, Sensei Kopish and Mr. Nusslock, who were the yin and yang in my own leadership, and I believe have much to impart in the ways of wisdom and skill to the next generation. And it would amiss not to acknowledge everyone who has so charitably contributed to our success. You know who you are.

I realize this must come as a hard blow to some of you. Many of you have thought of me as your teacher since first arriving at college. That will never change. I will always be your master, just as students arriving now will forever see Mr. Taddey in that same way. But if you believe in me, you must let me go, and move forward into shadows I aim to conquer, and if you respect me, you must help me build a better dojang for our family.

Much of what I have to say about this new progression is of a sensitive nature, and I cannot go into now. But know that I began drafting a very long and thorough email soon after arriving here, and I will reveal it upon returning home.

Update 1/20/11

Hello Everyone,

I hope that everyone had a great and safe holiday but now it is time for school to start again and you know what that mean, yes practices will be starting as well. This coming Monday, January 24th, and Tuesday, January 25th, we will be having our first classes of the semester. These classes will be help in the Union's Wisconsin Room East at 7p.m. We are also working on getting permanent rooms for the semester and will keep you posted on our progress. Until we have these permanent rooms and times continue to check the online calendar and email updates for class times. We will be adding them as we get access to rooms.

I look forward to seeing all of the new people that have inquired about information recently as well as all of the returning students. With the start of the new semester is also a great time to talk to people in your classes about coming to try martial arts. As members of Rising Phoenix we would like to extend an offer to you, if you have 3 people that you bring in or recommend the club to and they become members you will receive a FREE Rising Phoenix T-shirt.

Hope to see you all soon,
Mr. Taddey
